Check an APK Before You Install

A source and permissions checklist for Android users.

Check an APK Before You Install

An APK is an Android installation file. A familiar app name or a polished download page does not establish who supplied the file.

Confirm the source

Start with the app provider’s verified website or support channel. Compare the name and download destination, and avoid links sent by accounts you cannot identify. If the available information is incomplete, pause and ask the provider.

Read the requirements

Check Android compatibility, free storage and any account requirements before downloading. Do not assume that a file intended for one app is an update for another app with a similar name.

Review permissions

Ask why the app needs each permission. Requests for access unrelated to the stated features deserve closer inspection. Do not ignore device security warnings just to complete an installation.
